The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has shrunk VolkerFitzpatrick to ship enhancements to the RAF Coningsby’s Air Running Surfaces, together with the airfield’s taxiways and apron spaces. Aecom is consulting engineer for the scheme.

VolkerFitzpatrick was once first engaged for the challenge remaining summer time, underneath an £18.6m development contract. With paintings now beginning, the DIO says the overall challenge value is £28m.

RAF Coningsby, in Lincolnshire, is certainly one of two RAF Fast Response Alert (QRA) stations that offer protection to UK airspace, with pilots and supporting workforce on standby 24 hours an afternoon.  The station is house to 2 frontline combat-ready squadrons –  3 (Fighter) Squadron and XI (Fighter) Squadron – in addition to 29 Squadron, which trains the following era of Storm pilots.

RAF Coningsby’s position as a QRA station implies that its Typhoons will have to be waiting to release all the time, which means all development works must be deliberate across the airfield’s 24-hour alert dedication.

DIO challenge supervisor Dan Wilmott mentioned: “That is a very powerful funding in one of the vital UK’s maximum operationally important air stations. RAF Coningsby’s position in protecting UK airspace by no means stops, so turning in those enhancements whilst keeping up the consistent readiness of the Fast Response Alert has required cautious making plans.”

The challenge is anticipated to be finished in October 2026.
