Southbay Civil Engineering is heading to the South Atlantic for an 18-month task at the Falkland Islands.

Southbay Falkland Islands Ltd (SFI), a completely owned subsidiary of Gateshead-based Southbay Civil Engineering, has received the soft to design and assemble a brand new causeway at Port Stanley .

The present causeway, which extends to a big pontoon barge and spans 240 metres into the harbour, is to get replaced. The brand new causeway could have greater capability to house better automobiles.

The paintings comes to the development of a construction consisting of an internal rock core and outer rock armour, together with a brand new heavy metal ramp to attach it to the floating barge.

Southbay managing director Paul Stephenson mentioned: “To had been awarded this prestigious contract demonstrates our technical and logistical capacity to ship massive initiatives on a world scale, and our luck used to be made conceivable because of our construction of a simplified design and occasional chance building approach in accordance with our in depth wisdom as specialist marine civil engineers.”

A lot of the plant and kit has been transported from the Port of Tyne, together with a 150-tonne crawler crane, 3 20-tonne dumper vans, 3 excavators as much as 60 tonnes in weight, compaction apparatus and all of the small gear required.

Native Falklands labour and uncooked fabrics will likely be used to finish the undertaking, and then time the prevailing causeway construction will likely be decommissioned.

Stephenson added: “Having effectively co-ordinated the burden out of the specialist plant and fabrics from the Port of Tyne, we sit up for finishing on-site operations to improve our popularity as one of the most UK’s main marine contractors – each at house and at the different facet of the arena.”
