The Stone Demonstrator is a three-storey prototype construction shell on display on the Earls Court docket Building web site in London, at Empress Position.

It’s an off-site set up from the Design Museum’s Long term Observatory analysis programme.

The 6.5-metre tall construction is a low-carbon building prototype that places pre-tensioned stone construction tactics to the check. It’s been designed by way of structure observe Groupwork with engineers Webb Yates and Arup, and constructed from prefabricated herbal stone – now known as augmented stone – from The Stonemasonry Corporate.

The Stone Demonstrator is a prototype of an alternate option to construct that reduces carbon emissions by way of roughly 70% in comparison to a strengthened concrete body, it’s claimed, and 90% in comparison to a metal body.

The Stone Demonstrator is composed of stone blocks which can be hooked up by way of metal tendons and compressed to create pre-tensioned beams and columns. The floorplates are a mixture of pre-tensioned stone slabs, mixed with bushes joists and a roof of dowel-laminated bushes (DLT). The construction has a self-supporting facade of stone bricks which can be 90% decrease in carbon emissions than London’s vernacular of fired clay bricks.

Related Information

Along the Stone Demonstrator prototype, Long term Observatory has additionally funded engineers at College Faculty London to expand a information to designing stone buildings. The design information, led by way of Professor Wendel Sebastian at UCL, supplies a device for the development trade to make stone buildings more uncomplicated to undertake, and is thought of as a step in opposition to a construction code for stone.

Long term Observatory is the Design Museum’s nationwide analysis programme for the fairway transition. The programme is coordinated by way of the museum in partnership with the UKRI Arts & Humanities Analysis Council (AHRC).

The show shall be open to guests from 24th  November 2025 at Earls Court docket Building web site, Empress Area, London SW6 1TT
