Contractors for HS2 are transferring a 112-metre lengthy, 1,631-tonne metal construction over a piece of Lawley Middleway, a part of Birmingham’s ring street.
The operation shall be delivered by means of HS2’s major works contractor within the Midlands, Balfour Beatty Vinci (BBV) and subcontractor Mammoet, the Dutch heavylift specialist.
The bridge, a part of HS2’s Curzon Approaches, was once constructed off-line slightly than in situ, on land subsequent to Digbeth Canal, to scale back visitors disruption during the last two years.
Mammoet has jacked the construction up onto two self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs).
Consistent with the programme, on Friday 15th August, the bridge shall be circled via 90 levels at the SPMTs. From 16th to 23rd August, a skidding device with a jacking push/pull mechanism, will then be used along the SPMT to transport the construction into position throughout Lawley Middleway. This mix of ways isn’t used and is a primary for BBV at the HS2 mission.
To minimise disruption to street customers, the span shall be moved in night-time operations, transferring round 12 metres each evening, protecting the street open all over the day.

HS2’s head of supply for the Curzon Approaches, Greg Sugden, mentioned: “The workforce have labored arduous to get us in a position for but some other important feat of engineering, marking an additional step ahead within the development of the high-speed railway into Birmingham.
“The Curzon Approaches is a posh and difficult phase, with the railway being moderately designed and built via an city panorama and community of roads, railways and canals.”
BBV mission supervisor Georgios Markakis mentioned: “This operation is a primary for BBV, combining SPMTs and a skidding device to boost, rotate and transfer this massive construction into position. Paintings is progressing smartly in this complete phase of the Curzon Approaches, delivered by means of a workforce of greater than 250 other people, together with metal welders, metal fixers, joiners and engineering apprentices.”
Now at top productiveness, paintings will development in this phase of the railway with the second one Bromford Tunnel leap forward, Curzon 2 viaduct transfer, first Duddeston Junction Viaduct transfer, reopening of Aston Church Street, demolition of the previous Aston Church Street bridge and get started of development of the brand new Saltley Viaduct – all set to occur over the following 365 days.
