Aecom has designed a bridge over the Grand Union Canal in Alperton, close to Wembley, as a part of a £5m regeneration plan.
The bridge will attach pedestrians and cyclists within the Grand Union construction to the towpath at the southwestern facet of the canal, the Abbey Property and Park Royal employment hub.
The undertaking has now been put out for public session via Brent Council.
The bridge has a curving construction with narrow metal columns which are designed to mix with surrounding tree trunks and crops. The four-metre-wide deck is flanked via metal girders and crowned with 1.5-metre-high repeating metal fins.
Constituted of low-maintenance weathering metal, the bridge will intentionally glance rusty in reputation of the website online’s business previous. A ‘half-through’ deck design allows environment friendly structural efficiency with minimal bridge intensity, lowering ramp lengths to improve accessibility for customers and minimise environmental have an effect on.
Aecom structure director Erik Behrens mentioned: “We would have liked to design a bridge that embraces its distinct location and blends fluidly into its setting. One who would supply a sculptural but herbal enjoy that takes folks on a adventure via habitat and flora and fauna areas, with tree cover perspectives and vistas around the Grand Union Canal because the bridge opens up over the water. The uncooked end of the weathering metal provides authenticity and intensity to this contemporary design, commemorating the website online’s business previous whilst developing a mild and kinetic really feel.”

Venture supervisor Jack Summerhayes added: “Structurally, the ‘half-through’ deck supplies an effective resolution that reduces bridge intensity and ramp lengths, making it extra obtainable for all customers whilst minimising have an effect on at the habitat. Designing inside of this kind of constrained and environmentally delicate website online brings distinctive demanding situations, but in addition alternatives to ship cutting edge, sustainable answers that appreciate the realm’s herbal and historic options.
“Our built-in group is drawing on experience throughout engineering, structure, panorama and ecology to make sure the general design isn’t just useful and sturdy, but in addition complements the native atmosphere and helps lively go back and forth for years yet to come. Aside from the foundations, all elements will likely be fabricated offsite and lifted into position, making sure a swift set up with minimum disruption to the surroundings and canal operations.”
The paintings is being delivered via Easiest Circle, a partnership between Aecom, Select Everard, Gleeds and by the use of the Scape consultancy framework.
